Tranforming Education through Technology
The Inclusive Digital Transformation Advocacy Project was implemented by the Civil Society Education Coalition (CSEC) in Malawi under the GenerationDigital! initiative. Running from February to November 2024, the program aimed to empower youth, civil society organizations (CSOs), educators, and community leaders to actively participate in shaping inclusive digital education policies. With support from GenerationDigital!, the project focused on strengthening digital skills, promoting equitable access to technology, and fostering collaboration between government, private sector, and grassroots actors.
The core goal of the project was to enhance civil society and youth influence in policy spaces and drive inclusive digital transformation in Malawi’s education sector. Key milestones included:
Empowering 52 youth and CSO members to engage in national and district-level policy forums.
Influencing the review of three major education policies to include disability-sensitive provisions.
Advocating for a USD 20 million increase in the national education budget for Ed-Tech under the BeFIT program.
Supporting 178 education stakeholders (teachers, school committees, and District Education Networks) to champion digital inclusion.
Facilitating the adoption of “My Lab,” a digital science experiment tool now used in community day secondary schools.
Malawi’s education system faces challenges in integrating technology equitably, especially for marginalized groups. The project was born out of the need to address digital exclusion, limited policy engagement by youth and CSOs, and underinvestment in Ed-Tech infrastructure. By creating platforms for dialogue, training, and advocacy, the initiative sought to bridge the digital divide and ensure that every child and youth regardless of background can benefit from digital learning opportunities.
This project is a story of resilience, innovation, and collaboration. Despite economic challenges, including a 46% currency devaluation and fuel shortages, CSEC and its partners remained committed to delivering impact. Through community campaigns, football bonanzas, radio and TV programs, and social media outreach, the project reached over 3.5 million people with messages promoting digital education. Partnerships with organizations like FAWEMA, Oxfam Malawi, and GAYO amplified the reach and effectiveness of advocacy efforts. From grassroots mobilization to national policy influence, our journey reflects a shared vision: a digitally inclusive future for Malawi’s children and youth.
