CSEC was conceived to achieve the following objectives
As a non-state actor, CESC derives leverage from a well-defined governance structure stipulated in the entity’s constitution. The entity’s constitution provides for a Council comprising of representatives of the member organisations and is designed to be a supreme body responsible for policy and resolution adoption when assembled in an Annual General Meeting (AGM) fashion at least once a year. The Board of Trustees instituted to provide strategic and policy direction acts as a custodian of legal documents and processes. The Executive Committee which reports to the Board of Trustees is purposed to ensure that the Secretariat headed by the Executive Director and responsible for operational matters for CSEC adheres to legal provisions and policy imperatives when coordinating the implementation of policy and council resolutions.
CSEC, was established in July 2000 as a Civil Society Coalition for Quality Basic Education (CSCQBE), is an alliance currently constituted by 80 active diverse, independent and voluntary organisations which include Non-governmental Organisations (NGOs), Community-Based Organizations (CBOs), trade unions and Faith-Based Organizations (FBOs) dedicated to quality and inclusive education in Malawi. The coalition is fully registered under the Trustees incorporation act (CAP503) and also registered with NGO Regulatory Authority Council for Non-Governmental Organizations in Malawi.
CSEC boasts of a robust governance structure. The Board of Trustees which is obliged to meet quarterly is a custodian of CSEC legal documents while the Executive Board is responsible for supervising day-to-day operations of the Secretariat led by the Executive Director. The two governance organs are supported by standing committees namely the Programme Committee responsible for programme oversight and Finance, Audit and Administration sub-committees responsible for financial and administrative matters.
